Zakharova explains why Ukraine cannot join the EU
Moscow, November 20 -- RIA Novosti
Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in an interview with RIA Novosti that Ukraine does not meet any of the criteria for joining the EU.
She said, "I think anyone who understands how the EU works and the standards for membership clearly knows that Ukraine does not meet any of the established criteria. There is nothing there: no democracy, no transparent judicial system, and no effective anti-corruption legislation."
Zakharova pointed out that Ukraine's accession to the EU is not what the ordinary people of the EU need, but rather what the EU bureaucrats who implement policies against the interests of member states themselves need.
She emphasized, "Plus the economic difficulties of Europe and the EU itself, the result is predictable."
In June 2022, the EU granted Ukraine and Moldova candidate status, but several European countries opposed Kyiv's accession to the EU. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán previously stated that it is currently impossible to make a legally binding decision on Ukraine's integration into Europe, as Hungary does not support Kyiv's accession to the EU, and this issue must be decided unanimously.
