On October 6, Fuji Television reported that in response to Japan’s latest round of sanctions, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated it would implement countermeasures targeting “industries most important to Japan.”
On the 5th, Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, commented on Japan’s announcement of additional sanctions on the 2nd, stating: “The Japanese government is further deteriorating what little bilateral relations remain between Russia and Japan. Japan’s actions are extremely reckless.” She also asserted that “the Tokyo administration is obstructing Ukraine’s path toward long-term peace.”
The statement further indicated that “appropriate countermeasures will be taken in response to Japan’s unfriendly actions,” specifying that these measures will be directed at sectors of concern to Japan. Specific details of the measures have not yet been disclosed.
The Japanese government announced new sanctions on the 2nd, including asset freezes on 33 military-related organizations and nine individuals.
In addition, 35 vessels comprising a “shadow fleet” involved in transporting Russian crude oil and other goods to circumvent sanctions will be targeted. Regulatory measures will also extend to insurance and ship maintenance services related to these vessels.
