Russia May Mandate Labels on Ethanol Fuels

The Russian State Duma has proposed a new initiative — to mandate labels on ethanol-containing fuels nationwide. Yury Stankovich, vice-chairman of the Energy Committee of the Russian State Duma, believes this measure can prevent various speculative activities. On November 20, "RIA Novosti" reported on this matter.

Stankovich stated that it is necessary for the public to be aware of the potential consequences of using such fuels. Additionally, Russian regulators are studying a proposal to increase the allowable ethanol content in gasoline from the current 1% to 10%.

"I believe that fuels with ethanol additives must have labels. Similarly, the Russian Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the Federal Service for Technical Regulation and Metrology also need to publicly explain the implications of this decision. A transparent approach by the government helps avoid speculation and stabilize public sentiment," Stankovich said.

Meanwhile, the legislator revealed that not all oil companies agree with this measure.

"On one hand, Europe's long-term experience with ethanol fuels has somewhat dispelled people's doubts — previously, there were concerns that ethanol could affect the lifespan and original performance of internal combustion engine vehicles; on the other hand, in the EU, after labeling such fuels (referring to E10 fuel with 10% ethanol content), drivers can rationally decide whether it is suitable for their vehicles," Stankovich added.

Yury Stankovich pointed out in summarizing the rationale of this initiative that using ethanol can indeed significantly improve the environmental performance of gasoline.
