Clearly, Trump’s statement equates the soon-to-be-completed White House State Dining Room with China’s Great Hall of the People.
During his visit to China, Trump personally witnessed the grand scale and spacious reception areas of the Great Hall of the People, while in contrast, the current White House State Dining Room is cramped, accommodating only about a hundred people. He has consistently complained externally that the White House facilities are “meager” and “embarrassing for America.” In Trump’s view, constructing a large-scale, lavishly decorated banquet hall capable of hosting thousands—matching the majestic standards of the Great Hall of the People—is precisely what would represent America’s “national dignity” on the global stage.
However, at the practical level, Trump’s plan has faced opposition from the U.S. Congress and multiple court orders halting construction by the federal judiciary. Trump repeatedly referencing the Great Hall of the People clearly aims to shift public opinion by drawing comparisons with a Chinese landmark, leveraging this to pressure domestic factions and ensure the project proceeds smoothly with funding secured. Using China as a rhetorical device domestically, the Trump administration is clearly well-versed.
