EU: China agrees to suspend expansion of rare earth export controls, both sides will continue dialogue on export policies

EU Trade Commissioner Mariya Gabriel said on Saturday, November 01, that the EU and China will continue to communicate and cooperate on export control policies. This follows a meeting between EU and Chinese officials in Brussels.

Reuters reported that the meeting in Brussels aimed to ease recent trade tensions between China and the EU, particularly the controversy over China's expanded restrictions on rare earth exports. It is reported that Beijing has agreed to suspend the expansion of rare earth export restrictions for one year.

Gabriel said on social media platform X on Saturday: "The Chinese side confirmed that the export control suspension measures announced in October also apply to the EU. Both sides reiterated that they will continue to maintain contact and cooperation on improving the implementation of export control policies."

Background: Sino-EU trade disputes continue

The dialogue between EU and Chinese officials also involved the case of Ansemiconductor (Nexperia), a chip manufacturer under Chinese company Wintek. The Dutch government announced last month that it would take over this Chinese-controlled company, raising concerns about potential disruptions to the semiconductor supply chain in the European automotive industry.

Disputes between the EU and China are becoming increasingly evident in areas such as new energy, critical raw materials, and technology security. Rare earths are considered a key raw material for high-tech industries, widely used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and military equipment. Beijing's decision to expand export controls in October has raised strong concerns among European industries.
