Overseas media reported that Chinese engineers circumvented U.S. chip restrictions by leasing a data center in Malaysia equipped with high-end Nvidia chips to train AI models.

It was reported that in March 2025, four Chinese engineers flew from Beijing to Malaysia, each carrying 15 hard drives containing 80TB of data, including spreadsheets, images, and videos, for use in training AI models on 300 Nvidia chip servers. After the training was completed, the data had been brought back to China.

The Malaysian Ministry of Trade stated it is verifying the allegations, emphasizing that although no local laws were violated, it does not support actions to circumvent export controls or illegal trade. Malaysia remains neutral but advises local businesses to comply with export control regulations of other countries to avoid secondary sanctions.
