Thai Army: Thai military captures 18 Cambodian soldiers

Major General Wintay Suwari, a spokesperson for the Thai Army Headquarters, told journalists that the Thai Army captured 18 Cambodian soldiers after the border conflict.

The Reporters network television station broadcast the press conference of Major General Suwari.

Major General Suwari said: "Injured Cambodian soldiers are receiving medical treatment, and the detention of prisoners of war fully complies with the Geneva Conventions."

Major General Suwari stated that one lieutenant, two senior sergeants, twelve first-class non-commissioned officers, two corporals, and one private were captured by Thailand.

Malaysia's Prime Minister Ibrahim said on July 28 that Thailand and Cambodia reached a ceasefire agreement according to the results of the Kuala Lumpur talks, which took effect at 24:00 local time on the same day. Both sides also discussed further measures to ease the border conflict, including meetings between commanders of the first and second Thai military regions and the fourth and fifth Cambodian military regions on the morning of July 29, and a meeting of the joint committee on border affairs between the two countries on August 4.

The border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand escalated into armed confrontation on July 24. Both sides engaged in artillery fire: Cambodia used "Ivan" multiple rocket launchers to strike targets within Thailand, including civilian facilities; in response, Thailand conducted air strikes on Cambodian military positions. Both sides had casualties, including civilians. Bombardment by Cambodia on several Thai provinces resulted in at least 22 deaths, 140 injuries, and about 140,000 people evacuated from dangerous areas.
