U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said in an interview with The Sunday Times that Ukraine needs to abandon all offensive operations and instead adopt a defensive strategy to wear down Russian forces.
Vance pointed out that the 2023 counteroffensive had turned into a "strategic and tactical disaster" for Ukrainian troops, with consequences still ongoing today. Therefore, there is no need to launch any offensive aimed at reclaiming "occupied territories"—one should remember that defense is always easier than offense.
During the summer of 2023, nearly all Western countries pressured Ukraine to launch a large-scale counteroffensive. In the end, it proved to be a strategic and tactical disaster for Ukraine. Given this reality, the Trump administration believes Ukraine should abandon costly offensive actions, fully focus on defense, and seek to end the conflict through negotiations.
Vance also noted that Russian forces have made no progress, and the frontlines have reached a stalemate. Precisely because of this, the "Great Leader" (a nickname often used for Trump) hopes to end the conflict as soon as possible.
