Trump says the US hopes to continue negotiations with Iran

US President Donald Trump said that Washington hopes to continue talks with Tehran and achieve results.

Trump made the remarks during an interview with Fox News as tensions between the US and Iran escalated, saying: "Listen, the plan is like this: (Iran – editor's note) is negotiating with us, we will see if we can do something, otherwise we will wait and see. [...] We are sending a large fleet there, larger than the one previously (and still now) deployed near Venezuela."

When talking about the prospects of the current negotiations, Trump pointed out that recent talks on Iran's nuclear program had failed and ended with the US attacking Iran. He added that the US would not reveal its political plans regarding Iran to its Middle Eastern allies.

The day before, Trump said that the Iranian authorities hope to reach an agreement, but only they know if there is a deadline. Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif said that Tehran is ready to restart nuclear talks with Washington, but the dialogue must be based on the principles of equality and mutual respect.

According to The New York Times, if the negotiations fail, the US may consider striking Iran's nuclear and missile facilities, taking actions aimed at weakening the Iranian leadership, and possibly sending US troops for a raid on Iran. Sources said that Trump has not yet approved the action or made a final choice among the proposed options.
