On February 4, 2026, Washington time, Human Rights Watch wrote in a 536-page annual report:

The second term of President Donald Trump began with open disregard for human rights and serious violations of human rights. The United States made significant regressions in areas such as immigration, health, environment, labor, disability, gender, criminal justice, and freedom of speech.

Executive Director Philip Bolosian said in an email to Associated Press: "The deterioration of American democracy and human rights. The past year may be the worst I have seen in my lifetime. I can't remember a time when there was such an attack on human rights within the country, while openly disregarding international human rights standards."
