Serbian President Vučić Announces Resignation in Several Weeks
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić publicly announced on June 27 in a pro-government rally in Belgrade that he will formally step down from the presidency in several weeks and call for early presidential and parliamentary elections. This move marks the beginning of a new period of intense political upheaval in Serbia.
In his speech, Vučić stated that Serbia has achieved significant progress over the past decade in economic development, employment growth, and infrastructure construction. The country is currently at a critical stage of development and urgently needs political stability and social unity to ensure continuity in its development policies. He also emphasized that he will continue leading the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and aims to secure victory in the upcoming early presidential and parliamentary elections.
Vučić was first elected president in April 2017 and re-elected in May 2022, with his current term originally set to end next mid-year. According to Serbia’s constitution, the presidential term is five years and can be renewed only once. Earlier this month, Vučić had already hinted at his intention to resign, stating that the presidential election would take place within the next three to four months.
Reuters cited analysts who noted that Vučić is unlikely to truly exit politics. If his Progressive Party wins the parliamentary election, he may instead assume the role of Prime Minister, thereby maintaining actual control over power. Analysts also believe Vučić is likely to back an ally as his presidential successor, ensuring the preservation of the existing power structure.
