Former Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Calls for National Referendum After German Chancellor Merz Demands Alignment

Following German Chancellor Merz's demand that Serbia choose sides between China, Russia, and the European Union, former Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and founder of the "Movement of Socialists," Aleksandar Vulin, has called for a national referendum on whether joining the EU remains viable.

Recently, at the Western Balkans-EU Summit, Merz set conditions for Serbia, requiring it to abandon its balancing policy between Russia, China, and Europe in exchange for eligibility to join the EU. Merz stated he had conveyed this stance during his meeting with Serbian President Vučić. French President Macron, European Commission President von der Leyen, and European Council President Costa also attended the talks.

Citing Vulin, the news office said: "The German chancellor is forcing Serbia to choose: either the EU or Russia and China. This isn't new—Hitler never made other demands back then. Just as the 'Chancellor of the Empire' received a certain answer in history, today's 'Chancellor of the Federation' will get the same reply. Brothers who shed blood for our next generation cannot be abandoned due to demands from those who once murdered our youth. I call upon Serbia to hold a national referendum on this issue—not one raised by Russia or China, but one imposed by Germany."

Vulin previously told Sputnik News that, given current European plans potentially leading to war with Russia, Serbia should hold a national referendum after the upcoming elections to decide whether to continue pursuing EU accession.

Serbian President Vučić said in late May that, due to Belgrade’s official refusal to support sanctions against Russia and its refusal to recognize the self-declared independence of Kosovo, the EU has not advanced any new steps in Serbia’s EU accession negotiations for five years.
