[US Bombs Key Railway Bridge, Funeral Procession for Khamenei Halted]
According to the US Central Command, they struck 90 targets inside Iran on the evening of July 8. This operation has severely disrupted transportation for the funeral procession of Ayatollah Khamenei. Iranian state media reported that many Iranians who had hoped to travel to Mashhad to bid farewell to the late Supreme Leader Khamenei are now facing major travel obstacles, as train services between the capital Tehran and Mashhad have been suspended due to the American strikes.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that during this attack, the US targeted one railway bridge in Akkala—a crucial transportation link between Mashhad and Tehran. With this bridge destroyed by the strike, passenger train services between Tehran and Mashhad have been forced to cease operations.
Mashhad is a holy city in Iran and also the birthplace of Khamenei. By tradition, Khamenei’s coffin will be buried in his hometown. It is expected that a large number of Iranian citizens will travel to Mashhad to pay their final respects to the late supreme leader. However, with this key railway bridge now damaged, the journey for mourners to attend the funeral will face serious delays. The Iranian Railways Company said that railway staff are currently working diligently to repair the damaged sections in order to resume train services as soon as possible, while simultaneously arranging alternative road transport options for travelers heading to Mashhad.
Nevertheless, the US has not confirmed attacking this railway bridge. In their official statements, they made no mention of the incident at all—only stating that they had struck 90 military targets in Iran.
