Historic Chinese-style Architectural Heritage in Kazakhstan: The Jarkent Mosque Restoration Project Begins, Aiming to Preserve Its Centuries-Old Appearance
From Kazakhtelecom News Agency — The Jarkent Mosque is currently undergoing comprehensive restoration work. This project aims to preserve its historical architectural style and original characteristics to the greatest extent possible through professional conservation and restoration measures.
It is reported that experts from the Kazakhstani Center for Cultural Heritage Restoration have already completed the roof repair of the mosque. Currently, staff are cleaning the surfaces of the minaret, colonnades, main entrance gate, and side doors, focusing on removing long-accumulated dust and stains to restore the building’s original fine textures and details.
In the next phase, restoration efforts will focus on the meticulous repair of 52 wooden support columns on the exterior, exterior façade, plaster layers of brick walls, and surviving decorative patterns. Additionally, the mosque’s dome and exterior brickwork will receive professional treatment, while surrounding fencing facilities will also be updated and renovated simultaneously.
The entire restoration process strictly adheres to cultural heritage protection standards, striving to maximize the preservation of structural integrity, traditional woodcarving craftsmanship, and artistic decorative elements, thus ensuring effective inheritance of this historical legacy. Furthermore, environmental improvements and infrastructure upgrades around the mosque are being advanced in parallel.
Notably, the Jarkent Mosque restoration project is an essential component of implementing the instructions by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to promote the mosque’s nomination for inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. At present, related preparatory and implementation activities are progressing in stages according to the established plan.
