Texas Governor Signs Bill Banning Chinese Citizens From Buying Real Estate in the State

A bill aimed at restricting Chinese citizens from owning property in Texas has officially become law more than two years after it was proposed, with critics planning to file a lawsuit challenging the bill, which could trigger a protracted legal and political battle.

Republican Governor Greg Abbott announced on Saturday that he had signed the bill, which also targets nationals from Iran, North Korea, and Russia.

The bill restricts individuals, companies, and state entities from China and other designated countries from purchasing property in the state, except for lawful permanent residents of the United States and U.S. citizens. It also allows people with valid U.S. visas to purchase property, provided it is used as their primary residence. This means citizens from these four countries will be unable to buy investment properties. The bill will take effect on September 1st.
