(May 12th, Buenos Aires Chinese Press, Huang Dong) According to the report from the Federation of Medium and Small Enterprises of Argentina (CAME), the retail sales of medium and small enterprises increased by 3.7% year-on-year in April based on constant prices; however, the seasonally adjusted month-on-month data showed a decrease of 1.8%. In this case, the cumulative sales in the first four months of this year increased by 14.9% year-on-year.
The report also surveyed the main demands of medium and small enterprises, with 87% of business owners believing that the top priority for the government is tax cuts, while another major demand is the implementation of policies to stimulate domestic demand.
The report shows that merchants faced a relatively complicated situation in April: sales remained stable or improved slightly, but due to high service costs, tax burdens, and rental costs, merchant profits were low. Additionally, lower purchasing power limited consumption, and many merchants only sold essential goods. Although some industries emphasized seasonal recovery, most believed that the outlook was uncertain and unsustainable.
In terms of sectors, all surveyed industries showed year-on-year growth, with the largest increase being in perfumes (9.1%), followed by food and beverages (6.3%). In the first four months of this year, the cumulative growth in food and beverages was the largest, increasing by 19.8%.
It is reported that to cope with the current situation, the vast majority of merchants have adopted measures such as product diversification and cost reduction. Looking ahead, 56.7% of merchants believe that their operating conditions will improve next year, particularly in the textile and apparel industry, where expectations are highest (63.2%), followed by the pharmaceutical industry (58.2%).
