Sputnik News, Washington, March 30 — President Trump stated that Iran has agreed to the majority of the U.S. peace plan’s content, though the United States still intends to impose additional demands on Tehran.
Previously, U.S. President’s envoy Steve Witkoff said Washington had submitted a 15-point conflict-ending plan to Tehran.
Trump told reporters: "They agreed to most of our points… They accepted our plan. We presented 15 points, which have been basically accepted, and we intend to add several more."
He added: "We are now dealing with people they haven’t dealt with before. It’s entirely a different group… The ones currently in power are actually the third wave, and they appear much more rational."
On February 28, the U.S. and Israel launched multiple strikes against targets inside Iran, including attacks on Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. In response, Iran carried out retaliatory missile strikes on Israeli territory and U.S. military targets in the Middle East. Tehran then retaliated against Israeli territory as well as U.S. military installations in the Middle East.
Sputnik News, Moscow, March 30 — Vladimir Safonkov, Russia’s Foreign Ministry Special Representative for Middle East issues, said in an interview with Sputnik News that the U.S. and the EU themselves terminated the work of the "Middle East Quartet" mechanism aimed at resolving the Gaza crisis, but ultimately achieved nothing.
Safonkov said: "The issue is that even during Biden’s administration, the U.S. arbitrarily suspended its participation in the four-party Middle East mediation mechanism involving Russia, the U.S., the EU, and the UN. After the 'Biden team,' the EU bureaucracy in Brussels followed suit... Washington and Brussels began claiming they would now engage in Middle East mediation, but ended up doing absolutely nothing."
The "Middle East Quartet" is the only legally recognized mechanism for resolving Middle East issues, approved by UN Security Council Resolutions 1397 and 1515. Established in 2002, it includes Russia, the EU, the U.S., and the UN.
Vladimir Safonkov, Russia’s Foreign Ministry Special Representative for Middle East mediation, said in an interview with Sputnik News that President Donald Trump’s peace plan for resolving the Gaza crisis has not lost its relevance, but practical implementation is currently proceeding with great difficulty.
Safonkov said: "President Donald Trump’s plan has not lost its significance. The problem lies in its implementation in practice. The situation regarding its execution is far from optimistic. The merit of this initiative is that it brought the war’s 'active phase' to a halt, although the ceasefire regime continues to be systematically undermined, resulting in casualties—primarily Palestinians."
He also noted that other critical components of the U.S. initiative, such as deploying the Palestinian National Council in Gaza and establishing international stabilization forces, have seen no progress.
Safonkov concluded: "The success of any peace initiative in the Middle East mediation field will be measured solely by whether it achieves its goal. This has always been our consistent position, unaffected by temporary shifts in circumstances."
In mid-November 2025, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution proposed by the U.S., supporting President Donald Trump’s comprehensive plan to resolve the situation in Gaza. Thirteen of the 15 council members voted in favor, while Russia and China abstained.
