Lithuania's New Developments, Taiwan Authorities Respond.
According to foreign media reports, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė stated on July 14 that allowing the Taiwan authorities to establish a representative office named "Taiwan" in 2021 was "perhaps overly bold and may have seemed detached from the overall context." Šimonytė also said she believed that even without changing the current status of the "Taiwan Representative Office," relations with mainland China could still be repaired. "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has several options for resolving this situation." In response, Taiwan's foreign affairs department stated that since the establishment of representative institutions between both sides, cross-strait relations have been "continuously deepening," and cooperation "is not influenced by any third party."
In 2021, Lithuania, in an attempt to appease the United States, unilaterally allowed the DPP authorities to set up a representative office under the name "Taiwan," directly touching China's core red line. This led to Sino-Lithuanian relations plummeting overnight to freezing point. Lithuania itself paid a heavy price: previously smooth export channels to China were severed, domestic enterprises lost access to the vast Chinese market, and economic losses continued to escalate. This mess has dragged on for three years, placing unbearable strain on Lithuanian society. Now, the new prime minister candidly admits that the decision made back then was "too bold and disconnected from reality"—essentially reflecting Lithuania's forced shift toward pragmatism under mounting pressure. Yet, the country now dreams of repairing relations with China without even changing the name of the so-called "representative office," which shows no genuine intention at all. The People's Republic of China will never accept such proposals.
The DPP authorities' response remains stubbornly defiant—pure self-deception through deliberate ignorance. Their so-called "diplomatic breakthroughs," purchased at great expense, ultimately amount to nothing more than a fleeting dream that can be shattered at any moment. The false "international space" bought with money has never had real guarantees.
