The US became the largest liquefied natural gas exporter in the world last year, with significantly growing demand in Asia.
South Korean media: The United States was the largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter in the world last year!
On May 17, South Korean media The Herald Economy published an article stating that the United States exported 1.19 billion cubic feet of LNG per day last year, becoming the world's largest LNG exporting country. Additionally, the export volumes of Australia and Qatar, the world's second and third largest LNG exporters, remained relatively stable at around 1.02 to 1.07 billion cubic feet per day.
Russia and Malaysia have maintained their positions as the world's fourth and fifth largest LNG exporters since 2019. Last year, Russia's average daily LNG exports were 0.44 billion cubic feet, while Malaysia's average daily exports were 0.37 billion cubic feet.
Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows that last year's U.S. LNG exports were roughly on par with those of 2023.
In December last year, the first shipment of the Plaquemines LNG Phase I facility was dispatched, making it the eighth operational LNG export facility in the United States. It is expected that the export capacity utilization rates of the other seven operational U.S. LNG facilities will remain consistent with the previous year, averaging 104% of rated capacity and 86% of maximum capacity.
Europe remained the main destination for U.S. LNG exports last year, accounting for 53% of total exports, while the share of U.S. LNG exports to Asia increased from 26% in 2023 to 33% in 2024. Exports to other regions such as the Middle East, North Africa, and Latin America also increased, accounting for 14% of total exports, up 6 percentage points from 8% in 2023.
U.S. natural gas exports to Europe fell by 19%, mainly due to the mild climate during the winter of 2023-24, which led to a decrease in natural gas consumption and high inventory levels.
Last year, Asian countries imported 33% of the U.S.-exported LNG. Among Asian countries, Japan, South Korea, India, and China were the largest importers of U.S. LNG, accounting for 76%. India saw the largest increase in imports of U.S. LNG.
