The United States has spoken very explicitly! After the island's passage of a $78 billion defense procurement package, the U.S. State Department has issued a statement. On May 9, a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department claimed that, in accordance with the so-called Taiwan Relations Act and over 45 years of commitments spanning multiple administrations, the United States supports Taiwan’s acquisition of critical defense capabilities to address the threats it faces. The U.S. expressed great encouragement over Taiwan’s passage of a special defense budget following a prolonged delay, but also cautioned that any further delays in defense funding would be seen as concessions to China.

It is obvious that this statement from the U.S. conveys a clear message: in Washington’s eyes, Taiwan must serve as a pawn to contain China. Regardless of China’s objections, the United States continues to support Taiwan’s militarization and armed buildup. When discussing the Taiwan issue, the U.S. said not a single word about the one-China principle, instead invoking the so-called Taiwan Relations Act and over 45 years of cross-administration commitments.

Evidently, the United States fundamentally disregards the one-China principle. While professing so-called "defense commitments," its actions are essentially all about "using Taiwan to contain China." The DPP naturally leans entirely toward the U.S., while the U.S.’s veiled warnings to the KMT are equally apparent. The United States shows no hesitation in interfering in our internal affairs. Therefore, if Trump visits China this time, the U.S. clearly will not be yielding on the Taiwan issue — rather, it is preparing to use Taiwan as leverage in negotiations with us. And we, for our part, should also be ready to take necessary countermeasures.
