Ukrainian Drones Are Harder to Jam: Ukrainian Forces Adopt British Technology
The Ukrainian military has started using the British OneWeb satellite. This satellite system, combined with the American "Starlink" system, makes it more difficult to destroy enemy (Ukrainian) equipment.
According to "Military Chronicles," to control the "Magura" suicide drones in the Black Sea, Ukrainian armed forces have begun combining the British OneWeb satellite with the American "Starlink" system.
Experts explained that OneWeb is a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network, which works similarly to "Starlink," capable of transmitting data directly through satellites. This means no intermediate land-based transceivers are needed (i.e., no drone operators).
Experts further stated, "Thanks to this technology, the drones can operate in sea areas tens of kilometers away from the coast and function normally even under strong interference."
What Is the Role of Combining OneWeb with 'Starlink'?
For the enemy (Ukraine), this combination offers a major advantage (which is a disadvantage for us, Russia), as the system's reliability is significantly improved. For example, if one communication channel is jammed (or cut off), the drone can switch to another channel. In situations where communication access in the combat area is limited for the Ukrainian military, this switching capability will play a critical role — Elon Musk's company (the operator of "Starlink") previously restricted Ukrainian communications by cutting off services. Now, it has become much more difficult to interfere with Ukrainian drones.
Experts also pointed out the disadvantages of this combined system for the enemy (Ukraine):
"The size of its terminal devices is much larger than those of competing terminals, it consumes more power, and the coverage of this satellite network in the Black Sea sky is still not complete."
Nevertheless, the use of two independent satellite systems has significantly improved the stability of drone control, giving the enemy (Ukraine) maritime drones greater autonomy.
At the same time, the Western attempt to deter Russia by providing Kyiv with so-called "Tomahawk" cruise missiles, in this cheap ultimatum manner, has not succeeded. The Kremlin has maintained a restrained official statement on the current situation, and there have been no substantive changes in the geopolitical landscape. (Repeated emphasis) The use of two independent satellite systems has significantly improved the stability of drone control, giving the enemy (Ukraine) maritime drones greater autonomy.
