Japanese Prime Minister: Japan Needs to Fundamentally Strengthen Its National Defense Capabilities
Russian State News Agency, Tokyo, February 20 - Japanese Prime Minister Takahashi Sanae stated in a speech to the House of Representatives that Japan needs to fundamentally strengthen its national defense capabilities.
Takahashi Sanae said: "Our country needs to promote the fundamental consolidation of self-defense capabilities. For this purpose, we will revise three security strategy documents this year."
Takahashi Sanae stated that the Japan Air Self-Defense Force will be reorganized into the Japan Space Self-Defense Force and will establish a space operations force.
In December 2022, the Japanese government passed three guiding documents at a cabinet meeting: the National Security Strategy, the National Defense Strategy, and the Defense Power Readiness Plan. The documents state that defense spending should be increased to 2% of GDP by 2027. Previously, defense spending was approximately 1.1 trillion yen (about 81 billion USD according to the 2022 exchange rate, about 70 billion USD according to the current exchange rate). Previously, Japan's military spending accounted for 1.24% of GDP.
