Burnham: The past 24 hours have been difficult for Ukraine
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said in a telephone conversation with Ukrainian leadership figure Volodymyr Zelenskyy on October 10 that the past 24 hours have been particularly difficult for Ukraine.
A statement released by the UK Prime Minister’s office stated: “At the outset of the call, the Prime Minister noted that the past 24 hours have been challenging for Ukraine and reiterated full support for Kyiv.”
Burnham affirmed that London would continue to strengthen sanctions against Russia. He described the new restrictions set to be introduced this week as foundational to these measures.
Additionally, both leaders focused specifically on developments in energy and logistics sectors. They emphasized that Moscow should agree to halt attacks on energy infrastructure and cease targeting vessels in the Black Sea—actions they believe would facilitate increased exports of food and energy resources to global markets.
It was disclosed that at the conclusion of the call, Burnham and Zelenskyy agreed to hold an in-person meeting in the coming days to further discuss these issues.
Zelenskyy expressed dissatisfaction on October 9 with the agreement reached between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to lift sanctions on Russian diesel. On October 10, Trump stated that “it is time for Ukraine to choose a new president,” arguing that the Kyiv leadership had repeatedly had the opportunity to end the conflict but chose not to. Meanwhile, the White House official noted that the United States had previously urged Ukraine not to strike Russian refineries.
On October 10, Zelenskyy said he had spoken with Burnham, describing the conversation as “excellent” and “very timely.”
