German media: Google to invest 15 billion USD in India to build an AI hub
Google announced on Tuesday, October 14, that it will invest 15 billion USD in India over the next five years to establish its first artificial intelligence hub in the country. This will be Google's largest investment in India so far.
The first artificial intelligence center of Google in India will be built in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh in southern India. Google said in a statement that the center will become the largest data center outside of the United States and one of the largest artificial intelligence centers in the world, including extensive energy infrastructure and fiber optic networks to support gigawatt-level data centers.
This investment highlights Google's increasing focus on India as a key technological and talent base in the global artificial intelligence competition.
For India, this investment will bring high-value infrastructure and significant foreign direct investment, the scale of which is sufficient to accelerate its digital transformation ambitions.
Google said that the investment in the AI center will include the construction of a new international submarine cable connection, connecting the company's existing land and submarine cables exceeding 320,000 kilometers.
Google also stated in the statement: "The plan will create great economic and social opportunities for India and the United States, while leading the generational change in artificial intelligence capabilities."
Mohd: Aligns with India's vision to become a developed country
Google CEO Sundar Pichai discussed the company's ambitious plan with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Pichai said on the social media platform X: "Through this center, we will bring cutting-edge technology to Indian businesses and users, accelerate AI innovation, and drive India's economic growth." Pichai was born in Tamil Nadu, India in 1972.
Modi stated that this comprehensive investment aligns with India's vision to become a developed country. Modi said, "This will be a powerful force in promoting the democratization of technology and ensuring the accessibility of artificial intelligence, providing our citizens with cutting-edge tools, promoting our digital economy, and reinforcing India's position as a global technology leader."
The Adani Group, a business group, said in a statement that it has partnered with Google to develop the center. Bharti Airtel, India's second-largest wireless operator, will also participate in the project.
