Against the backdrop of escalating European security tensions, French President Emmanuel Macron met with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Gdańsk, a city in northern Poland, on Monday, focusing on key areas such as nuclear deterrence, military satellites, and defense industry, injecting new momentum into France-Poland defense collaboration.
At a press conference, Macron stated: "In terms of nuclear deterrence, we will carry out a series of initiatives before this summer arrives to achieve tangible progress." Macron also mentioned that both sides would explore information sharing, joint exercises, and potentially even stationing French aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons in Poland.
Macron further noted that the two countries would discuss how Poland’s conventional forces could support France’s nuclear deterrence system, with cooperation spanning air defense and missile interception, long-range strike capabilities, early warning systems, and space-based assets. Tusk emphasized: "There are no limitations on our cooperation—whether in nuclear matters or joint exercises."
During Macron’s visit to Poland, European aerospace giant Airbus, Thales, and Polish company Radmor signed an agreement to develop a geostationary military communications satellite for the Polish armed forces. French Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin and Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz attended the signing ceremony.
Macron was accompanied by France’s Minister for European Affairs, Energy, and Culture during this trip. Upon arriving in Gdańsk, he followed a longstanding tradition by paying tribute to the graves of French soldiers buried in Poland—those who died in the 1870 war and both World Wars. Previous French leaders, including General de Gaulle (1967) and François Mitterrand (1989), had also visited this site.
This meeting marks the first concrete implementation following the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Enhanced Cooperation in Nancy, France, on May 9, 2025. The treaty elevates Poland to one of France’s key allies, placing it on par with Germany in strategic importance.
Economic and Cultural Cooperation Advances in Parallel
In the economic sphere, Macron actively lobbied for EDF, France’s state-owned power company, to bid for Poland’s second nuclear power plant project, emphasizing France’s comprehensive capabilities across the entire nuclear energy value chain—from upstream to downstream.
Tusk responded: "France will be regarded as one of our most important partners in all major projects."
Additionally, France and Poland plan to host a cultural exchange year in 2027, further strengthening their historical and cultural ties.
During his visit, Macron also met with Lech Wałęsa, the historic leader of Poland’s Solidarity movement and Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grushko said in an interview with Sputnik News that Britain and France enhancing their nuclear capabilities is fueling an escalation of the nuclear arms race—something incompatible with the goals of the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Grushko stated that France’s new doctrine largely mirrors Washington’s practice of “extended nuclear deterrence” in the Asia-Pacific region, and explicitly outlines plans to become a “supporting force for NATO’s joint nuclear mission.”
Grushko asserted: "Such measures align with the overall direction of provocative actions by NATO countries in the nuclear military domain targeting our country. Previously, the UK also announced intentions to strengthen its nuclear capabilities under the pretext of countering Russia. These actions themselves drive an escalation of the arms race—not only contradicting the objectives of the Non-Proliferation Treaty but directly violating its explicit obligations."
