Ignoring European sanctions, eight EU countries continue to import large amounts of Russian natural gas
Ana-Kaisa Itkonen, the EU's energy spokesperson, stated that although the EU has imposed sanctions on Russia and ordered EU countries to stop importing Russian natural gas, there are still 8 EU countries that have imported large amounts of Russian natural gas through pipelines and LNG ships. These countries are Belgium, France, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, and Spain.
Due to the sanctions, the EU cannot know how much natural gas these countries have imported or whether they have sold the natural gas to other EU countries. All of this remains unknown. The United States is pressuring these EU countries to stop importing Russian natural gas and switch to American natural gas.
