[German Media Reports: AfD Proposes Limiting Power of EU Commission]
Berlin, October 20, 2026 — According to a press release published by Politico Europe, a platform document from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) outlines proposals to abolish direct elections to the European Parliament, replacing elected members with representatives appointed by national parliaments. The AfD also intends to restrict the European Commission to purely administrative functions and transfer decision-making authority to heads of state of member countries. The party proposes establishing an intergovernmental body to resolve disputes among EU member states, thereby replacing the Court of Justice of the European Union. The AfD argues that Germany should be exempted from EU regulations on migration, taxation, social policy, and defense. It further calls for Germany’s exclusion from shared borrowing mechanisms.
In addition, the proposed framework includes significant reductions in the EU budget, a freeze on recruitment at EU institutions, and the abolition of several EU bodies. The plan also opposes the introduction of a plastic waste tax.
The document will be presented by AfD co-chair Alice Weidel during a plenary session of the European Parliament on October 21.
