Germany, Italy, and Belgium Propose "Brake Mechanism" to Check EU Commission Power Amid Escalating Internal Struggles
According to Politico, leaders of Germany, Italy, and Belgium have proposed establishing a “brake mechanism” within the European Union to temporarily halt EU regulations and decisions by the European Commission that are perceived to hinder competition and industrial development.
The report notes that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever also advocate for swift reductions in administrative burdens on small and medium-sized enterprises.
The three leaders have written a joint letter to European Council President António Costa. According to the publication, the initiative was discussed ahead of the EU summit on October 15–16 and could serve as leverage against the European Commission during negotiations over the 2028–2034 EU budget.
Previously, the European Commission had proposed that member states relinquish their veto rights on a range of issues. EU enlargement commissioner Marta Kos added that these matters include sanctions, tax evasion enforcement, and EU expansion.
