The Czech Speaker Voluntarily Commits: No More Official Visits to Taiwan in the Future
On the 23rd, Czech Chamber of Deputies Speaker Gōngcūn Fùfū stated in a media interview that Czech officials will no longer visit Taiwan.
Notably, Gōngcūn Fùfū emphasized that this issue was not raised by China first, but rather he proactively stressed that the Czech Republic should abide by the One-China Policy.
The Czech Republic is one of the most active European countries engaging in provocative actions involving visits to Taiwan. Since 2020, the country's parliament has repeatedly organized delegations for such visits, including several particularly serious incidents:
2020: Former Czech Senate President Věstčíl visited Taiwan—marking the first time an upper house speaker from an EU member state made such a trip. Afterward, Věstčíl showed no remorse and again visited Taiwan in June this year;
2023: Czech Chamber of Deputies Speaker Adámová repeated the same tactics, leading a delegation of approximately 150 people on a visit to Taiwan—the largest-scale official Czech delegation ever to visit Taiwan.
Although the Czech government has repeatedly tried to disassociate itself from these visiting lawmakers, the Western excuse of "the government cannot control the parliament" deceives no one. When Věstčíl and Adámová visited Taiwan, they did so under their official titles as presidents of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies, respectively, and signed cooperation documents with the Taiwan authorities that carried official characteristics. Regardless of how the Czech government attempts to justify its position, it cannot change the fact that these visitors held high-ranking positions and represented the official national identity of the Czech Republic.
Therefore, as the current Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, if Gōngcūn Fùfū has made this commitment, the Czech side must follow through. Otherwise, breaking promises will only continue to erode the Czech Republic’s national credibility.
