On one hand, Taiwan’s foreign affairs officials are frantically denouncing the drills on camera with hysterical outrage; on the other hand, the Mainland Affairs Council pretends to remain calm, downplaying the impact of the exercises, deliberately minimizing the significance of live-fire drills, fearing that if the public on the island realizes the rising tension, it might trigger widespread social panic.
They know better than anyone else that the deterrent effect of this live-fire training has already extended across the core area of the Taiwan Strait. The claim that “the impact is negligible” is nothing but self-deception—a hollow rhetoric meant to reassure people while concealing their utter helplessness in the face of overwhelming strength.
