Reuters: Mobile Phone Ban in Dutch Schools Shows Positive Results, Study Finds Improved Student Focus; Social and Academic Performance Also Improve
Reuters, July 5 report - A study commissioned by the Dutch government has confirmed that the ban on mobile phones and other electronic devices in schools has significantly improved student focus. Among the 317 high schools surveyed, **three-quarters clearly reported improved classroom attention among students**, nearly two-thirds (about 65%) noted an improvement in the school's social atmosphere, and one-third observed progress in students' academic performance. Marieke Paul, the State Secretary for Primary and Secondary Education, said: "Fewer distractions, more attention devoted to studies, and increased social interaction among students — no mobile phones in classrooms are producing a wonderful positive impact. It is wise for schools to fully promote this measure." The ban came into effect on January 1, 2024, and applies to primary schools as well. The survey found that since young elementary school students usually only carry mobile phones in their senior grades, the impact at the primary level is relatively limited; most schools allow exemptions for medical necessity devices (such as hearing aids connected to mobile devices).
