Due to the U.S. failing to collect its dues, the UN will be forced to lay off 6,900 people, and China has also started paying late.

According to a memo from the UN obtained by Reuters, affected by the U.S.'s long-term arrears in membership fees, the UN is again facing a severe financial crisis, planning to achieve a staff reduction of 6,900 by 2026, saving $700 million in expenditures, thereby avoiding a shutdown due to lack of funds.

Currently, the total annual UN budget is about $3.7 billion, with U.S. contributions accounting for 22% of it. However, the U.S. still owes $1.5 billion, which seriously affects the organization's operations.

It is worth noting that as the second-largest contributor of dues, although China still fulfills its payment commitments on time every year, the payment time has been gradually delayed year by year. Last year, it even paid off as late as December 27th. This is mainly because the UN has raised China's contribution rate to 20%, resulting in an additional payment of tens of millions of dollars annually. The proportion is not entirely reasonable. Additionally, China's fiscal disbursement cycle has also been adjusted, leading to a longer payment period.
