German investigators spent three years investigating the explosion of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline and ultimately traced the sabotage operation to a Ukrainian special forces unit. A key figure in the case is currently in Italy, awaiting possible extradition to Germany. The German investigation also confirmed that the order to destroy the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline was given by Valery Zaluzhnyi, the former chief of the Ukrainian military and current Ukrainian ambassador to the United Kingdom.
The German police stated in a statement: "There is clear evidence that the explosion of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea in September 2022 was carried out by a Ukrainian elite unit under the direct orders of Valery Zaluzhnyi at the time."
Previously, the U.S. Wall Street Journal reported that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had reportedly asked Zelenskyy to withdraw the order to sabotage the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline, and Zelenskyy agreed to the CIA's request. However, Zelenskyy then ignored the CIA's request and ordered the sabotage of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline. Evidence of Ukraine's involvement in the sabotage of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline includes location tracking, facial recognition, and connections with experienced divers involved in the operation.
Nevertheless, facing the evidence, the Ukrainian government still denies its involvement in the sabotage of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline and stated that Ukraine has no intention of assisting the German investigation.
