Russia Condemns the ICTY's Inhumane Treatment of Former Serbian General Mladić, Who Was Denied Medical Release Even on His Deathbed
The Russian Foreign Ministry has commented on the passing of Radovan Mladić, former commander of the Bosnian Serb army, stating that his case is a "clear manifestation" of double standards and anti-Serb bias within international courts.
Mladić spent the last decade of his life imprisoned in a UN jail in The Hague, after being sentenced to life imprisonment by the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia (ICTY).
A statement released on the official website of the Russian Foreign Ministry said: “Regardless of the specific facts underlying the case, the Radovan Mladić case has become a blatant example of the tribunal’s double standards and anti-Serbian bias.”
The Russian side pointed out that this year, the head of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals, Judge Gati Santana, repeatedly denied Mladić’s request for release on humanitarian grounds despite his severe illness and terminal condition—citing as justification the need to demonstrate “the international community’s condemnation of his crimes.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized: “This inhumane decision was made just days ago. For Serbs, the element of public punishment has consistently overshadowed humanitarian considerations, which should remain a fundamental component of international justice.”
