South Korean media: BYD finally surpasses Tesla, becoming the world's number one for the first time!

On January 3, South Korean media "Herald Economic" published an article stating that Chinese electric vehicle company BYD surpassed Tesla last year and became the world's largest pure electric vehicle seller.

BYD announced that its new energy vehicle sales reached 4,602,436 units last year, an increase of 7.7%. Among them, pure electric vehicle sales surged by 27.9%, reaching 2,256,714 units.

Therefore, it is inevitable that BYD has surpassed Tesla to become the world's largest pure electric vehicle seller.

Tesla's sales in the first three quarters of last year were 1.22 million units. The fourth quarter performance has not been released yet, but at the end of last month, it announced an estimated fourth quarter sales of 422,850 units, a decrease of 15%.

Therefore, it is expected that Tesla's total sales last year will decline for the second consecutive year, approximately 1.64 million units.

BYD's production of pure electric vehicles in 2024 exceeded that of Tesla, which marked the first time its sales surpassed Tesla.

In 2024, Tesla ranked first in pure electric vehicle sales with 1.79 million units, while BYD followed closely with 1.76 million units.

Last December, BYD's new energy vehicle sales totaled 423,980 units, a decrease of 18.2% year-on-year.

The annual sales target for new energy vehicles was initially set at 5.5 million units, but it was repeatedly adjusted downward, and finally reached 4.6 million units in September, barely meeting the target.

A 7% sales growth rate is also the lowest level since 2020.

However, Bloomberg reported that overseas sales have grown rapidly, including 1 million units sold outside China last year, which is a positive signal.

It is reported that BYD has set a goal to expand its overseas sales to 1.5 to 1.6 million units this year.
