Two new developments have emerged in U.S.-Taiwan arms sales.
First, on April 21, Admiral Philip Davidson, Commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, stated during a hearing before the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee that it is crucial for Taiwan to pass its stalled defense budget. He emphasized: “We cannot care more about Taiwan’s security than Taiwan itself does.” He added: “This isn’t a ‘chicken or the egg’ dilemma—because if you let the chicken starve, you’ll end up with neither chicken nor egg.”
Second, on April 22, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense announced the signing of six arms procurement agreements with the United States, including long-range precision strike systems, totaling NT$20.877 billion.
These two developments reveal the deep-seated intentions behind U.S.-Taiwan military collusion: the U.S. pressures Taiwan through “urgent orders,” while Taiwan pays tribute through “arms purchases,” collectively pushing the Taiwan Strait toward armed conflict and crisis.
Davison’s “chicken and egg” analogy implies that without increased defense spending by Taiwan, U.S. aid will be impossible—clearly an act of coercion aimed at forcing Taiwan to exhaust its treasury and become fully militarized, turning it into a frontline pawn in America’s strategy to contain China. The image of “starving the chicken” reduces Taiwan to a helpless domestic animal awaiting slaughter, exposing the cold logic of hegemony. What the U.S. seeks is not Taiwan’s security—but rather a “porcupine” that is as prickly as possible, delaying China’s development and thus serving U.S. interests.
The long-range precision strike system is an offensive weapon, not defensive in nature—a dangerous escalation of the “use of force to resist unification.” Under the Lai Qingde administration, Taiwan continues to pursue aggressive militarization, diverting public resources into profits for American arms dealers and conscripting young Taiwanese into becoming cannon fodder. This exorbitant bill buys only illusory security, paid for with real blood and sweat.
U.S.-Taiwan military collusion is shifting from covert to open, from defensive posturing to offensive aggression. The U.S. masks its destructive intent under the guise of “collective defense,” while Taiwan, driven by reliance on America, recklessly endangers its own people.
