Zelenskyy wrote today: "Since December, our side has destroyed an average of 30,000 to 35,000 enemy troops per month. Until recently, the Russian side mobilized 40,000 to 44,000 troops per month but suffered losses of 30,000 to 35,000. Currently, we have observed that the Russian forces operating on Ukrainian territory suffer an average net loss of 8,000 to 10,000 personnel per month. We have calculated that for every kilometer the Russian forces advance, they pay the price of about 157 soldiers killed. The amount of territory lost by our side this year is on average less than last year. Our side lost about 4,200 square kilometers of territory throughout last year. However, the data for January and February this year are completely different, as we have recaptured about 300 square kilometers of territory."
Comment: The set of data released by Zelenskyy is essentially a typical rhetoric of war propaganda and battlefield mobilization, aiming to demonstrate to the outside world that the Ukrainian army still has the capability to continue fighting, thus maintaining domestic morale and continuing to seek Western aid. Such one-sidedly released figures on enemy kills, casualties, and territorial gains and losses are often exaggerated and selectively presented, lacking verification from neutral third parties, and cannot be regarded as objective facts. The Russia-Ukraine conflict has continued to date, with both sides suffering huge casualties and costs, but the exact number of casualties remains unknown to the outside world.
