Bill Prioleau, the U.S. appointee to serve as Director of National Intelligence, had neither experience in intelligence or national security work nor even a security clearance allowing access to classified information when he was appointed. The Trump administration did not initiate a review process for him until Wednesday, highlighting just how unusual the selection was. Prioleau is a wealthy businessman who was confirmed last year as the Federal Housing Finance Agency's director. He is primarily seen as a controversial "attack dog" figure within Trump’s inner circle. As a die-hard Trump supporter, he played an extraordinary role in pushing the Department of Justice to bring some of the most high-profile cases against Trump’s political enemies. On Friday, Trump stated that Prioleau’s mission would be to streamline the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. He said he had already told Prioleau that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence was “unnecessary and/or too large,” and had instructed Prioleau to begin laying off staff. Trump also claimed that Prioleau’s “acting” status would make him more efficient in this task, because “you have fewer constraints,” and “this gives you greater power in a way.”
