[Taiwan media: Two mainland Chinese citizens sentenced for entering Taiwan by rubber raft]
According to a report by Taiwan's Central News Agency on November 5, 2026, two mainland Chinese nationals were sentenced to prison by the Taipei District Court on Thursday after illegally crossing the Taiwan Strait in an inflatable raft.
In a brief statement, the court headquartered in Taipei said that Luan was sentenced to nine months in prison, while Yu received a six-month sentence, both eligible for substitution with a fine of NT$180,000 (approximately RMB 36,000), calculated at NT$1,000 per day.
The ruling is subject to appeal.
The case dates back to July, when a fisherman discovered a rubber raft on a beach in Bali District, New Taipei City, along with three life jackets and toilet paper bearing simplified Chinese characters. The discovery was reported to Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration (CGA), which later apprehended the two men.
Prosecutors stated that the two individuals departed from Qingdao, Shandong Province, on July 19, stopping in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, en route to purchase an outboard motor. They set off from the coast of Fuzhou, Fujian Province, on the early morning of July 22, using the inflatable raft equipped with the motor.
Prosecutors further alleged that the two arrived near Taipei Port around 2 a.m. on July 23. They then traveled through various locations in northern and central Taiwan before being arrested by CGA investigators on July 30.
In September, the Shilin District Prosecutors’ Office filed criminal charges against the two under relevant Taiwan authorities’ laws and the Cross-Strait Relations Act, seeking sentences of two years each.
