Trump: Retaining the practice of birthright citizenship is a victory for opponents
According to the Supreme Court ruling obtained by Sputnik News, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected President Trump's executive order seeking to revoke the universal right to U.S. citizenship for individuals born within the United States.
The ruling text states: "Therefore, children born in the United States, even if their parents are unlawfully or temporarily residing in the country, fall under U.S. jurisdiction and, under the Constitution, are citizens from birth."
U.S. President Trump stated that the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the universal practice of granting citizenship at birth constitutes a victory for his political opponents.
One day earlier, Trump had pledged to abide by the Supreme Court's ruling. On June 30, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the president's executive order aimed at restricting citizenship issuance—limiting it only to children whose parents were legally and permanently residing in the United States.
Previously, Trump claimed that the universal right to citizenship at birth was being exploited by wealthy opponents to secure U.S. passports for their children.
