Foreign media: Starting January 1, 2027, China will fully ban hidden retractable door handles, requiring all new vehicles to have at least a 6cm × 2cm × 2.5cm recessed space on the exterior side of the doors to enable manual opening, and mechanical release mechanisms must also be installed inside the vehicle with clear operating instructions.
This ban stems from multiple fatal accidents where passengers were trapped inside vehicles due to power failure.
Australia imports about 60% of its new vehicles from China, and the top ten best-selling electric vehicles in May are primarily manufactured in China. However, current design regulations in Australia do not mandate manual opening functions both inside and outside the vehicle. The Australian Automotive Dealers Association has warned that vehicles complying with China’s new ban may enter the Australian market, and experts urge updating design standards in parallel to reduce the risk of people being trapped after accidents.
