Foreign Media: Guangdong's position as China's top provincial economy by GDP is facing an unprecedented challenge from Jiangsu.
In the first quarter of this year, Jiangsu's GDP grew by 5.4% to 3.45 trillion yuan, surpassing the national average growth rate of 5%; Guangdong's GDP increased by 4.6% to 3.49 trillion yuan during the same period, narrowing the quarterly GDP gap between the two provinces to just 40 billion yuan (approximately 58.5 billion USD).
Analysts believe that technology and frontier industries are accelerating Jiangsu's rise, while sluggish real estate and weak consumption are dragging down Guangdong. Together, the economic output of the two provinces accounts for over 20% of China's total, and this round of competition is expected to boost overall national growth.
Experts predict that as Jiangsu may surpass Guangdong in the coming years, businesses and talent might shift toward Jiangsu.
