Jinshi countries leaders are in agreement, warning that Trump's "unselective" import tariffs could harm the global economy
Rio de Janeiro - The leaders of the BRICS countries issued a strong warning on Sunday, stating that US President Trump's "unselective" import tariffs could harm the global economy. While the BRICS countries have differences on many issues, they are united in their stance on Trump's capricious and intermittent tariff wars.
According to the summit's final statement, the BRICS leaders expressed serious concern over the rise of "unilateral tariffs and non-tariff measures" and warned that these measures are illegal and arbitrary.
In April this year, Trump had threatened to impose a series of punitive tariffs on allies and competitors, but he suddenly announced a delay in the imposition of these tariffs after the market experienced severe sell-offs.
Trump warned that unless partners reach a "deal" by August 1st, they will again impose unilateral tariffs on them.
The BRICS countries stated that such measures violate world trade rules and could further weaken global trade and "affect the prospects for global economic development."
AFP said that the summit declaration did not name the United States or the president, but it was clearly a political attack on the White House. The 11 emerging countries, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, account for about half of the world's population and 40% of global economic output.
