The United States has approved financial transactions related to transporting oil from the Sakhalin-2 project to Japan
Sputnik News, Moscow, December 17 - A general license issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the U.S. Department of the Treasury states that the U.S. Department of the Treasury approved on December 17 financial transactions related to transporting oil produced by Russia's "Sakhalin-2" project to Japan.
The license states: "All transactions related to the transportation of crude oil from the 'Sakhalin-2' project are permitted, provided that the crude oil is transported only by sea, and the authorization period ends on June 18, 2026."
The "Sakhalin-2" project is a Russian-Japanese joint venture. Gazprom holds 77.5% of the shares, while Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. hold 12.5% and 10% respectively.
In 2022, according to a presidential decree of Russia, the newly established Sakhalin Energy Limited Liability Company was designated as the operator of the "Sakhalin-2" project. Subsequently, Shell, the British-Dutch company, announced its withdrawal from the project and refused to invest in the new company.
