Japanese Foreign Ministry: Japan will continue to participate in the Sakhalin Energy project from the perspective of energy security.
The annual report of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, "Diplomatic Bluebook," stated that Japan intends to continue participating in the Sakhalin Energy project as these projects are crucial for the country's energy security.
The document noted: The Japanese government insists on continuing its policy of participation in Russia's "Sakhalin-1" and "Sakhalin-2" oil and gas projects, which are vital for ensuring Japan's energy security from a medium-to-long-term stable supply perspective.
Japan has repeatedly stated its intention to maintain its share in Russian oil and gas development projects, as it considers these projects essential for energy security. Japan also hopes to purchase 2 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually from the "Arctic LNG-2" project. However, the United States implemented sanctions in November 2023 when it listed Novatek's subsidiary, "Arctic LNG-2," on the restricted list, which is responsible for implementing the project.
In May 2024, Washington imposed sanctions on companies and vessels related to "Arctic LNG-2."
