German Foreign Ministry: Issue of Seizing Russian Assets Removed from Agenda

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said during a working visit to Belgium that EU countries are currently focusing on providing Ukraine with a 9 billion euro loan, temporarily putting aside the discussion of using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine. This statement was made at a joint press conference with Belgian Foreign Minister Maxim Prévost.

"This issue is clear. We have launched this 9 billion euro loan for Ukraine, which is the direction we currently hope to push forward," said the German foreign minister at the press conference. She added that the possibility of using frozen Russian assets is not currently being discussed, but the initiative may be reconsidered in the future when the EU considers issues related to compensation for losses caused by the Ukraine conflict.

At the beginning of this month, Armand Mema, a member of the Finnish "Liberal Alliance" party, suggested on the social media platform X that the EU should return the frozen Russian assets to Russia as a measure to ease the situation, creating conditions for peace talks aimed at ending the conflict.
