Russian Ambassador to Japan: "Japanese Government's Attitude Toward Russia is Absurd and Unrealistic"

According to Sputnik News, on February 11 local time, Russian Ambassador to Japan Nikolai Kozlov said that the Japanese government, on one hand, claims to want to sign a peace treaty with Russia, but on the other hand continues to impose sanctions, which is "absurd and unrealistic," and will only backfire.

On that day, Kozlov told Sputnik News in an interview: "The Japanese government solemnly states that it hopes to continue 'peace treaty' dialogue with us, while at the same time claiming that it has no choice but to exert pressure through sanctions against Russia, and recklessly propagates fabricated threats from Russia. This absurd and unrealistic stance will only backfire."

After the new round of Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out, Japan joined the anti-Russia sanctions in March 2022, banning a large number of Russians from entering the country, freezing accounts of Russian entities and individuals, and prohibiting the export of hundreds of types of goods to Russia.

Kozlov also said that any illegal actions against Russian assets in Japan will not be tolerated by Russia, "Any actions taken against the assets of the Russian Federation without consent, including freezing, using the income, and confiscation, constitute serious violations of international law, including the principle of equality of state sovereignty and immunity of sovereign property."

He emphasized that such actions will damage Japan's reputation as a currency issuer and have a negative impact on the global financial system, "As for our possible response, I can assure you: any illegal action, once implemented, will not escape punishment."
