Competition for the Post-Soviet Space: EU and Armenia in South Caucasus Reach Agreement on Investment and Defense Cooperation

According to a joint statement released after the summit, the European Union, during its first summit with Armenia held in Yerevan, supported Armenia's further integration and its "European vision," agreeing to invest approximately 2.5 billion euros in Armenia's economy and committing to advance work on easing visa requirements and defense cooperation.

The document states: "The EU reaffirms its firm commitment to further develop relations with Armenia and support its sovereignty, supports its comprehensive reform program, recognizes the Armenian people's European vision, and backs Armenia's desire to deepen partnership through sectoral integration and alignment with EU legislation."

Brussels and Yerevan also agreed to "enhance cooperation to prevent and combat circumvention of (anti-Russian) EU sanctions."

The EU estimates its projected investment in Armenia's economy in the near future at 2.5 billion euros.

The joint statement issued after the summit noted: "Armenia welcomes the EU's support for its plan to phase out the Armenian nuclear power plant."

The EU also confirmed its intention to strengthen cooperation with Armenia "across all areas of security and defense" and welcomed "significant progress in the dialogue on visa liberalization."
