Korean media: Samsung ranks second in international patent applications, LG fourth, but what about Huawei? Samsung Electronics has maintained its second-place position for two consecutive years, while LG Electronics jumped two places from sixth last year. Samsung Electronics' number of patent applications increased by 18.2% (an additional 716 applications) compared to the previous year (3924 applications). This is the highest increase among the top ten companies. After last year, LG Group became the only South Korean enterprise this year where all three major subsidiaries (LG Electronics, LG Energy Solution, and LG Chemical) entered the top 50. The rankings of all three companies have risen, demonstrating their influence in the global market. In terms of design patents, unlike last year, only LG Electronics remained in the top 5. LG Electronics applied for 459 patents, an increase of 12.3% over the previous year, maintaining third place. On the other hand, Samsung Electronics' number of patent applications decreased by 118, dropping from first place in 2023 to sixth place in 2024. Hyundai Motor rose six places from 18th to 12th. Huawei ranked first globally in corporate patent applications, filing a total of 6600 patents. Qualcomm (3848 applications), which ranked third, and Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) (1993 applications), which ranked fifth, followed closely behind. Apple (18th place) and Google (20th place) entered the top 20, with patent applications increasing by 57.95% and 37.18% respectively compared to the previous year. Last year, the total number of global patent applications was 273,900, an increase of 0.5%, showing an upward trend. By country, China ranked first with a growth of 0.9%, while the United States declined by 2.8%.
