The Economist: Artificial Intelligence Has Permeated Nearly Every Stage of Hollywood Film and Television Production
This technology is being used in scriptwriting, shooting planning, visual generation, editing, and content adaptation for mobile platforms. Since the beginning of this year, Netflix has applied AI technology to approximately 300 film and television projects; 17 minutes of finished footage in the series "American Experiment" were generated by AI, cutting both production time and costs in half.
Currently, AI has not replaced actors or directors. Its core function is to reduce production expenses and accomplish shots that were previously too costly or posed safety risks. For example, in the series "Young Washington," AI was used to simulate turbulent flood scenes, eliminating the need to place actors in dangerous environments during filming.
Performers’ attitudes have also shifted: after widespread anxiety across the industry in 2023, an increasing number of actors are now willing to collaborate with AI-driven creation—provided they have informed consent, full control throughout the process, and appropriate compensation. The most pressing unresolved issues today remain copyright disputes and the unauthorized use of actors' likenesses.
The Economist draws a parallel between this transformation and Hollywood’s earlier transition to digital cameras: initially seen as a threat by professionals, the new technology ultimately became an industry-wide standard.
